Worship in the snow

Thank God for snowy Sundays

The scrolls across the bottom of television screens on Sunday, Jan. 3, announced the cancellation of church services throughout the Greater Portland area because of the three-day Nor’easter.

The Cape Elizabeth United Methodist Church wasn’t on the list.

Rev. Ruth Morrison conducted two services on Sunday morning, first at 8:15 with three people and then at 10 with 24 brave souls, including Choir Director Faith York and Larry Larry Ducharme, who made the journey from Peaks Island to Cape Elizabeth.

In services to celebrate the coming of Epiphany, Pastor Ruth compared members of the congregation venturing out into the snow for Sunday worship to the Wise Men following the star to find the Christ Child in Bethlehem. Ruth’s converational sermon took place in the Narthex of the church, rather than the Sanctuary, so that everyone who attended could view the snow through the glass doors while Ruth established the tone for the moment.

For those who attended, it was a Sunday worship that will be remembered for future snowy Sundays.

Snowy impressions were left in the pews in the outdoor chapel to make it look as if 24 people had been there -- even though the impressions were made by only three.

The wall by the front entrance to the church left no doubt as to what season we were celebrating.
