Advent begins: The season of light

The first Sunday of Advent at the Cape Elizabeth UMC included the familiarity of traditions and the warming experience of sharing them with close friends and longtime church members.

The season officially began when Nancy Marsden held a candle over the Advent Wreath, introducing the first flicking light of the season, while her husband, Joel, read the Advent prayer. It was a family affair that was proudly shared by the whole congregation.

The first Sunday of Advent also rekindled another CEUMC tradition with the angel tree. As it has been for many years, each member of the congregation received a cutout paper angel in their bulletin. Following the lighting of the Advent Wreath, everyone was asked to write a Christmas wish or memory on the angel and then hang it on the tree in the front of the sanctuary. Placing of the angels on the tree will continue every Sunday until Christmas.

Sunday also brought out the annual Giving Tree, from which members of the church family selected gift requests from clients of My Sisters Keeper and the Family Crisis Center.
Each request is a wish from a child or adult, providing the giver with what type of gift they can contribute. Wrapped gifts should be be returned to the tree by Sunday, Dec. 11. Members of the congregation are encouraged to clear requests from the tree  by Sunday, Dec. 4.
Requests from the Giving Tree should be filled by Sunday, Dec. 11.
