Week 3: 70-plus dresses

After three Saturdays, women from our church have created more than 70 dresses for the “Dress a Girl Around the World” mission. The project will finish next Saturday, Feb. 13, with another 10 a.m.-noon session.

At this last session, a local ambassador from the national Dress a Girl organization, based in Tempe, Arizona, will be present to work with the women from our church.

At last week’s session, Pam Koonz-Canarie (above photo) from South Portland and a member of the Saint Bartholomew Catholic Church, joined our women to create some dresses. She had read about the project in the newspaper and wanted to know if she could take part. She said the project was wonderful and that our church was “very welcoming.”

If you would like to participate on the final Saturday, bring a sewing machine to the church at 10 a.m., along with 1 yard of cotton fabric and 1 package of extra wide (1/2 inch) double fold bias tape for each dress. Elastic will be provided. Another option is to being a pillow case and bias tape.

If you don‘t have a sewing machine and would still like to help, we will need people for ironing, measuring and cutting bias and elastic tape, or just being a cheerleader!
