Free produce and goods on Tuesdays
Judy’s Produce Pantry is once again open at the Cape Elizabeth United Methodist Church from now until the early fall, every Tuesday from 3-5:30 p.m. Please note that these hours are different from last year’s.
Thanks to a cooperative effort between the church, William H. Jordan Farm on Wells Road and the two Cape Community Gardens on Spurwink Avenue at the Gull Crest Fields and Maxwell’s Farm, the best of this summer’s harvest of succulent vegetables will be available, free of charge, to individuals and families in Cape Elizabeth who have limited resources and are struggling to eat healthy food.
Farmers throughout Cape Elizabeth have been contributing to the pantry. On recent Tuesdays, while many of the summer crops are still developing, the pantry offered a wide selection of herbs, spinach, lettuce, and beet greens.
And new this year, the pantry also is offering non-perishable boxed and canned goods, free of charge, for anyone with limited resources. On selected Tuesdays, baked goods also will be available, donated by members of the church.
The offering of fresh vegetables has been named Judy’s Produce Pantry, to honor the memory of Judy Simonds, whose passion was gardening. Judy had been a Cape Elizabeth resident since 1971 before her passing last year.
