Annual luncheon gathering

The United Methodist Women gathered for its first meeting after the summer break on Sept. 10, sharing a lunch of salads, cookie bars and sherbet, while planning events for the coming year.

All women of the church are invited to join the monthly gathering, always on the second Tuesday of the month at 1 p.m. in the church. The next gathering will be on Tuesday, Oct. 8, at which time a slide presentation will be shown on a subject still to be announced. Kathie Hackett will be the hostess.

The UMW also is planning its Whatever Sale, scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 19 from 9 a.m.-noon at the church. The women are looking for donations of attic and garage treasures, books, toys, dishes and any other household item except clothing. Please bring your donations to the church following the 10 a.m. service on Oct. 13 or any time during the following week. Donations can be left in the back pews of the sanctuary.

The UMW will set up the sale on Friday, Oct. 18. Proceeds from the sale will go toward the UMW’s mission work.

At each of its gatherings, the UMW places spare change in a jar, following the scripture lesson from Luke 21: "As Jesus looked up, he saw the rich putting their gifts into the temple treasury. He also saw a poor widow put in two very small copper coins. 'Truly, I tell you,' he said, 'this poor widow has put in more than all the others. All these people gave their gifts out of their wealth; but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on." This coin jar goes toward the UMW's mission work.
